Laresari, Heart of Darkness Chapter 11
It was a cool, bright morning. Dew clung to the grass and Sari’s scales. She yawned and shook herself off, flicking her tail to remove the last of the water off. Walking out from under the shade of the cliff, Sari appreciated the feeling of the sun on her scales. She had slept very well that night, it was later than normal. Dipping her head, Sari drunk from the rushing icy water.Snorting and shaking her head as water splashed up her nose, Sari turned back to see Gaia stretching as she woke up.
“‘morning,” Gaia mumbled sleepily.
“Good morning,” Sari replied, “Ready to go?”
“Sure,” Ga

Gaia, Heart of Darkness chapter 10
Sari was true to her word, they flew non-stop that day. Gaia’s wings were drooping and she’d dropped a couple of feet when sunset finally came. They’d long since passed over the forest and were on what Sari referred to as ‘the last leg’. Sari swooped and landed elegantly beside the river in a small, grassy meadow. Gaia landed with a thump behind her, exhaustion making her wings ache. They walked away from the river, under the shadow of the cliff. Unlike Sari, Gaia did not like sleeping out under the stars; it just did not feel safe to her. A nice enclosed cave was better for her, sheltered from the elements and h

They continued to fly, following the river.
Sari slowed, “There it is,” she nodded with her head, “The joining of the south and east rivers.”
“Oooo,” Gaia replied.
“Well, it’s technically the separating of the rivers, the east river is the last to separate off,” Sari said, swooping low to skim the surface with her claw.
The river became much more turbulent here, and continued to be heading south.
“How many rivers are there?” Gaia asked, fluttering just above Sari.
“Four, the west, the south west, the south and the east, they all come from the same source,” Sari sai

Sari spent the rest of the night steadily circling the cave entrance. Her path took her out over the river, back around to the cliff and then over the ocean, back over the other side and over the river again. Her route though, was unimportant to Sari, the important thing was the thoughts swirling inside her head. She swooped back onto the cliff, in time to watch the sunrise over the ocean. She hadn’t slept a wink, but knew she’d be ok until the next night. When travelling alone, she’d gone three days without sleeping. The sky was stained a brilliant yellow, the colour reflected in the sea. Sari closed her eyes, the sooner th

Sari watched as Gaia drifted off, but couldn’t sleep herself. Her talk had been a reminder of all the things she’d left behind, everything that may have changed. Suddenly, the walls seemed to be pressing in around her, she couldn’t breathe. Being careful not to disturb Gaia, Sari shuffled out of her corner. When the ceiling of the cave became high enough for her, she spread her wings and took off. Flying high, so the sound and the wind off her wings didn’t disturb the sleeping dragons, she headed towards the entrance. Landing with a light clattering of claws, she walked through the stuffy entrance and out into the open

Sari never really liked closed caves, she preferred open skies or at the very least open-ended caves. She enjoyed watching the stars, following the patterns of the moon. Walking into the thin, dark entrance to the cave, Sari felt very claustrophobic. The walls were worn smooth by years of dragons passing through; it was a very tight fit. The stone corridor opened up very suddenly, Sari found herself perched on the edge of a precipice. It opened into a large, deep cave. The ceiling was a maze of cracks, letting in just enough light to see by. Looking down, Sari was surprised to see quite a few dragons, and not just youngsters.
“We have

Tossing and turning, Sari jerked awake. She’d gotten barely an hours sleep that night, her mind too pre-occupied to drift off. She stretched, forcing her sluggish body up. Gaia was up, bright and perky, talking to Delphi. Sari smiled, it was good that Gaia wasn’t letting the fact that Delphi was a sea-serpent bother her.
“Good morning,” Delphi said, turning her head.
Gaia, who was perched on her nose, squealed in pleasure as she was swung around. Then caught herself with her wings as she was dislodged.
“‘morning!” she shouted, swooping down beside Sari.
“Good morning,” Sari said, clamber

The next day was uneventful, they simply flew. The current had diverted, gone a different way. It was slower going, Sari spoke occasionally to correct Gaia’s flight pattern. Other than that though, she didn’t speak. Gaia made up for that though with her almost incessant jabbering, even if she did try to get Sari to talk about her past. No matter how many different questions the young dragon asked though, Sari could never tell her. Ever. Instead then Gaia settled for telling Sari all about her life, and it was interesting. Gaia seemed to have left behind a great deal of friends when she left; they seemed to get up to all sorts. Sar

Gaia seemed to know very little about a thing called ‘personal space’; Sari was quick to remind her. A swift kick to the ribs made Gaia move away, allowing Sari to curl up with her wing over her face. Her heated breath very quickly warmed up the small air space between her face and her wing, keeping her cosily warm. Some years ago, dragons lost the gift of fire breath. It was a huge and devastating loss, yet no-one knew why. It just left them with extremely warm breath that they used to heat their caves. Sari had trouble sleeping; she still couldn’t decide whether or not she had made the right decision. It was for this reas
